Like the Forgotten Cloister, Fever Break (being a hospital) represented a bit of a change of pace from the greater Spellbreak map. The goal I had with the area was to make a structure that was imposing, but not necessarily in an overtly martial way. I wanted it to feel less like a fortress and more like a haven for its patients, if that makes sense. For the design of the building I drew inspiration from Chateau de la Mothe-Chandeniers in France; I thought that the looming gatehouse tower and heavily enclosed central courtyard would give me the secluded, tucked away feeling I wanted for the POI.

I also poked around woodcuts depicting medieval hospitals, and came away convinced that I absolutely had to have an operating theater. I pitched it and people liked the idea, so I got a custom made octagonal wooden gallery of sorts, which I used in the upper level of the largest building in the complex overlooking the operating table. I think it makes for a nice memorable space to have a magic duel.

Finally, the storage room on the left side of the building has a higher-than-average concentration of potion spawns. Our range of loot was relatively limited in variety, so when these opportunities to work its placement into the narrative of a POI did come up I was always happy to jump on them. I also think it’s nice for a battle royale game where you’ve got some choice as to where you’re spawning to have little pockets of concentrated resources like this. It’s a fun way to reward map knowledge, and the risk-reward dynamic if other players have the same idea is pretty compelling.
