Wayfarer’s Market was the first full-scale point of interest I built in Spellbreak (and my career in general for that matter), so it’s got a very special place in my heart. What was there before was a prefab castle that was repeated elsewhere in the map, so I was given the assignment to essentially bulldoze it and put something cool in its place (this scenario is how a lot of my POIs got started actually).
The concept I went with was that of a very old, crumbled ringfort that had been repurposed in the years before the kingdom’s destruction as a roadside bazaar/trading post settlement. It features an auction house, numerous vendors’ stalls, and my personal favorite touch: a very literal hole-in-the-wall bar. I think that’d be a fun place to have a drink, don’t you?
Much later in the course of Spellbreak’s development, I was given the chance to return to the area and add the bridge, Wayfarer’s Crossing. It’s got an inn built into the interior of the bridge for the convenience of weary travelers; figuring how to incorporate that while still making it feel like it had been a usable bridge at one time was an interesting challenge. While these two areas were built separately they’re intended to mesh together somewhat, so I’m presenting them here as one POI.
